Character Counts and the Six Pillars of Character

Character Counts! and the Six Pillars of Character is a concept from the Josephson Institute center for youth ethics.

We start teaching these pillars of character to young children so that they may be contributing, ethical, members of society with good character. This is what will get them ahead in life. The 6 pillars of character are:

Caring- (think love/heart) Be kind; be compassionate; show people you care;express gratitude; help people in need

Fairness-(think of an orange, divided evenly) take turns and share; play by the rules; be open minded-listen to others

Respect- (think of the golden rule) Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule; be tolerant of differences; use good manners, not bad language;be considerate of the feelings of others; don't threaten, hit or hurt anyone

Responsibility-(think, keep earth green) do what you are supposed to do; always do your best; have self control; be self disciplined; be accountable for your choices

Trustworthiness- (think "true blue") be honest; don't lie, cheat or steal; have the courage to do the right thing; build a good reputation; be loyal

Citizenship-(think purple royalty) cooperate; get involved; stay informed-vote; be a good neighbor; obey laws and rules; protect the environment
